Pedal to the metal
In general, the 18 Wheels of Steel
series of racing games is a pretty middle-of-the-road bunch of titles that offers something a little different to the usual Need For Speed
-style racers. This one continues in the same vein as its predecessors so if you liked those you'll probably get a kick out of this one too. However, if you weren't a fan, things are unlikely to change here. This one follows the formula pretty closely, placing you in the well-worn shoes of a trucker. The key difference here is that you're driving through some more extreme environments than usual, with the snow-covered wilds of Alaska, the searing deserts of Australia and the Andes mountains being just some of the locations to be visited. You'll play through a series of missions, with certain items required to be delivered under strict time conditions, with greater rewards given for completing them quickly and with a minimum of crashing. You've got 25 trucks to choose from in total while unlike other titles in the series, there are no management aspects to worry about so you can just concentrate on hitting the gas pedal and driving like you've got a pair. Extreme Trucker isn't a bad little game if you're into racers that are a bit different and for fans of the series, it's probably a must play. It scores some points for being a bit unusual and the various trucks and hazardous environments certainly make driving a bit more interesting. The visuals are fine for a low budget affair so if you do like your trucks, you could do worse than this.
