Take on the Third Reich
If the fantasy trappings of Myst and other such third-person adventures
don't thrill you, then Operation Valkyrie might just be worth a look. It's not a classic entry into the genre but its historical setting gives it a level of intrigue which helps it stand out a little. This one throws you into an unusual role, as you take the part of an SS officer who becomes involved in a plot to overthrow Hitler and bring an end to the Third Reich. If you've seen the movie Valkyrie, you'll have a good idea where this is going. While the plot if original enough for the genre, the gameplay will be familiar stuff to anyone who's played any similar game before. You'll essentially explore a series of historically accurate environments which are portrayed in detailed fashion to evoke a strong sense of the period, while seeking out items to solve the numerous puzzles which stand between you and victory. There are also logic puzzles to add some variety, while the story is told by some stylish still scenes, and you even have the option to play in full black and white to really bring home the feel of being in the war. The story does end on something of a cliffhanger which is resolved in the sequel, Operation Bunker
(although that one is really not worth picking up). This isn't a great adventure but it is a solid one. It scores some points for its setting and story, which are refreshingly different, while the visuals and mood are also well done. However, the puzzles are a little too mundane and there's just a sense of not really living up to its potential.
