Standard JRPG fare3

The Agarest series is one of the Japanese RPG franchises that spans generations, with the player having to worry about breeding as well as all the usual sorts of things these games throw at you. It's fairly standard fare for the genre but is certainly worth a look if you're into this sort of thing. Storywise, it's business as usual here, with a fantasy world under threat from an awakened evil. The player takes control initially of a military commander, but as the story progresses, you hand over the quest to your descendants, with the story unfolding over five chapters. Much of the gameplay is familiar stuff, with the usual exploration, picking up side quests, shopping and chatting with the locals to enjoy. Combat is turn-based, akin to Final Fantasy games, with the usual array of upgrades and weapons to explore. One mechanic of note is the opportunities to talk with various women who have the potential to become the mother of your children. The way you deal with them influences the characteristics of your offspring and the story so it's interesting to see how these decisions play out. In many ways, this is business as usual for the JRPG genre with little in the way of originality but everything is well executed, so this makes up for any lack of innovation. In terms of story, this is is fine, with a few decent twists and turns but no real surprises, while the combat is generally satisfying and challenging. Throw in some good graphics and an interesting world and you have a decent, if unspectacular, addition to the genre.
