Alien blasting time
The Alien Breed series of Gauntlet- or Chaos Engine-style topdown shooters is one of the most fondly remembered set of games from Team 17, famous creators of the Worms franchise. The games mixed intense action with brooding visuals and a strong sense of claustrophobia to great effect, resulting in a set of classics that still play well today. Impact is essentially a remake of the original game and while it still maintains the sense of excitement that made its predecessor so good, it's probably not worth picking up by itself unless you're a diehard fan. The concept remains the same and sees you making your way through a series of science fiction environments blasting the hell out of some extremely vicious aliens. Perhaps the biggest change here is the perspective which is no longer topdown but with the action now seen from an isometric viewpoint. Other elements remain similar though, with an array of hi-tech weapons, lots of nasty aliens and so on. Taken on its own merits, Impact is an undeniably decent little game. It is quite old-school in its nature but that should come as no surprise really, given its pedigree. The change in perspective does mix things up a little and the visuals are very nice, with lots of slick effects and some lovely environments to explore. The action comes at you hard and fast and the weapons are satisfyingly meaty to use and quite varied. The controls are perhaps a little wobbly and things do get quite repetitive but it's not the longest game in the world so you should have some fun here if you just want to shoot things.
