Time to kick some alien butt
The Alien Shooter series is a fun but shallow set of games that update the ideas of things like Gauntlet and Alien Breed and throw them into an isometric perspective. They're certainly not deep or complex experiences but if all you're looking for is a few hours of hardcore alien blasting, then they do the job. This one continues from Alien Shooter 2 and once again finds the world under threat from ravening hordes of aliens out to enslave the population for their own evil ends. Any humans left alive are conscripted into the army, and so it is you find yourself on the front line of the conflict. Your only real goal is to make your way through the various isometric environments, blasting the hell out of the waves of aliens who dare to stand before you. There's a huge range of weapons to help out, and you're going to need it as there can be up to 100 aliens on screen at a time while there are also vehicles to jump into to help you get around. There are also some mild RPG touches, as you can upgrade your weapons, while you also have access to backup gear, like drones and radar dishes. For a bit of old-school intensity, this is a solid choice. The action comes at you hard and fast right from the outset and you're going to need to your fastest trigger finger if you're going to survive. The range of weapons, gear and vehicles is a nice touch, giving some variety and a little bit of depth, and which is aided by the upgrade system. The visuals aren't bad, with some nice environments and special effects, while the controls and sound are just as solid. It's perhaps a tad on the short side but apart from this, this is a wild ride.
