Get ready to get scared

This is part of a series of superb horror games which includes A Machine for Pigs and Justine. This one continues to the same high standard and is a must play for any serious horror fan. In similar fashion to classics like Alone in the Dark, players find themselves in control of a man who just happens to have lost his memory and who finds himself trapped in the mansion of an enigmatic Prussian baron. The game starts out with you exploring the mansion, trying to find clues as to your identity, while uncovering the mystery of the mansion and staying out of the clutches of the terrifying Shadow. The game plays out in first person perspective and is essentially a true survival horror experience as there are no weapons here and instead you must use your wits to survive. Another interesting mechanic is the need to keep your character sane, which is achieved by progressing the storyline and making sure you have enough light, and which requires plenty of searching. If you let your sanity drop too far, monsters appear and home in on you but you can't look at them as otherwise your sanity will be completely compromised. There are also plenty of puzzles to solve to add to the fun. For a real old-school horror experience that follows in the footsteps of Silent Hill and Resident Evil, this is top notch stuff. There is a superb sense of brooding terror, thanks to the excellent environmental design, while the monsters are wonderfully creepy. Tension builds gradually but there is no shortage of shocks, so if you want to be scared silly, check this out.
