Middling end to a great series
The Anomaly series of tower defense games has provided some interesting twists on the genre which have combined to make the franchise a good bet for fans of this type of experience. This final installment however, drops the ball somewhat by being pretty much a standard tower defense with little in the way of originality. This time around, you're in control of the aliens as the humans start to take the fight back to their homeworld and must set your defenses in order to keep those pesky invaders out. You've got various units and towers to use and fight against, some quite deep technology trees to play around with, and with the battle taking place over 24 unique levels. There are three difficulty levels to try your hand at, and which make the game accessible to newcomers and series fans alike. You've also got some interesting special functions, which can have some cool effects on your own troops and the enemy and which encourage some experimentation. If taken as simply an addition the tower defense genre, then this is a perfectly decent little game. The action is fast and furious, with enough options to play around with and which give the game some replay value. The visuals are absolutely lovely, with some very detailed and vibrant design work which leaps off the screen and with plenty of slick special effects to catch the eye. It's only when considered as part of the Anomaly series that this seems a little disappointing, especially as it is the final entry, and one can't help but wish the developers had pushed things a little further. Perhaps one for casual players rather than hardcore genre fans.
