A remastered classic
The original Another World is a widely acknowledge masterpiece of gaming, which combined cinematic storytelling, tight platforming and cunning puzzles to groundbreaking effect. This 20th anniversary edition of the game updates the visuals, sound and controls but adds little else really, although it remains a first class experience. If you've never played the original, then you're in for a treat. The story is a complex one which finds a physics professor on the wrong end of an experiment and who ends up being zapped to an alien world. He soon finds himself captured by hostile aliens, thus beginning an epic adventure of survival against the odds. The game itself is divided into stages and with each level mixing exploration, combat, platforming and environmental puzzle solving in clever and enthralling fashion. Each element of the game is integrated in superb fashion and it's this sheer variety which is at the heart of the game's appeal. However, on first play, it is a highly challenging one, thanks to the lack of on-screen interface and sheer difficulty. Players are encouraged to experiment with puzzles and combat and there is a lot of memorizing of enemy patterns to be done. You will almost certainly die a lot the first few times you play but again it is testament to the game's design that you will keep coming back for more in an attempt to overcome the challenge. The updated visuals are certainly even more attractive than the original's but but for purists you can always play it the way it was first designed, but whatever you do, make sure you do play it, it's that good. Similar to the likes of Prince of Persia, this is truly classic stuff.
