Far from a classic

Although Armikrog might look pretty impressive, with its claymation visuals which are reminiscent of The Neverhood and which is from the people behind classic platformer Earthworm Jim, it sadly fails to live up to expectations. Like the former game, this is a point-and-click adventure, also similar to the Monkey Island and Discworld titles, but this one is just too short and bug-ridden to make it worth your time. You take the role of space explorer Tommynaut and his pal, a sort of talking alien dog, as they attempt to escape from a mysterious fortress. What follows is a fairly standard genre experience, where you'll explore a bit, uncovering the reasons behind your incarceration, while solving the myriad puzzles which bar your progress. The whole thing uses admittedly lush visuals, with that distinctive claymation style, while it also features an impressive voice cast, with the likes of Jon Heder popping up the credits. On paper at least, this sounds like it could be a deliciously mapcap adventure, full of humor and fun and games. However, in practice, you'll find it's not really worth your time or effort. Although the claymation approach does the game a very individual feel, but the compression used here makes it all look a bit of a mess. There are also many annoying bugs, such as dropped sound and music, which render things frustrating. The puzzles aren't all that interesting either, and get repetitive, while there's just too much cursor hunting for the game to be overly fun. All in all, a bit of a wasted effort.
