Aha, me hearties!

The Assassin's Creed franchise has perhaps gone a little too far recently with the annual installments, but there's no denying that most of the games are fine examples of the stealth genre and which provide a lot of entertainment. Black Flag is an excellent offering which manages to bring pirates into the mix with great success and which is a huge amount of fun. There's the usual bizarre modern day element in the story, which finds an unnamed protagonist tapping into the life of an 18th century privateer, Edward Kenway, but it's in the past that you'll spend most of your time. As Kenway, you'll become a rogue assassin who find himself battling both the assassins and the Templars as they seek out a mysterious technology. The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who's played an AC game before, as this one doesn't really mix things up. There's the usual blend of open-world exploration, missions, stealth, combat, and free-running, but you can now go hunting and even get to captain your own ship for naval battles. Assassin's Creed III might have lost its way a little, but this installment brings the series back on form, thanks in no small part to its pirate setting. The world created here is a gloriously rich and vibrant one, with the various exotic locations all fascinating to explore. The story isn't perhaps the best of the franchise, but it's decent enough, while the sheer range of activities and places to visit means there's a lot of fun to be had here. The naval combat can take some getting used to but apart from this, this is fine romp.
