Kick it old-school

The followup to the equally excellent Avadon: The Black Fortress, this is a cracking old-school RPG that is reminiscent of classics like Baldur's Gate and the Ultima games. You don't need to have played the first game in the series to enjoy this, so whether you're a newcomer or an old hand, you should have a great time here. The game is very much an RPG in the classic fashion, with a massive open world fantasy environment to explore, heaps of side quests and all the usual customization. The story finds you as a servant to the Black Fortress, with your role being a mix of warrior and spy, and you'll find yourself caught up in a complex plot involving civil war. The gameplay itself is largely familiar stuff, with several character classes to choose from, each with unique abilities and spells, while the game is viewed from an isometric perspective. As you explore, you'll find dozens of side quests, dungeons and treasure, while the story has multiple endings and which depend on your actions. Perhaps The Corruption's biggest appeal is the way that it implements the story into the gameplay, so that you actually feel like your actions have an impact on the world and that you're not just slaying monsters because it's a game. The turn-based combat is both thrilling and tactical, with plenty of strategic options to try out. The story is gripping and only occasionally let down by some poor writing and while the visuals and sound aren't spectacular, they certainly get the job done. If you want a real epic fantasy adventure to get stuck into, this is a good bet.
