Lots of fantasy fun
series is a long running set of traditional RPGs that hark back to the days of Baldur's Gate
and the like, with their massive worlds and complex plot lines. The three original titles are actually remakes of the Exiles series and strangely enough, this one is actually a remake of a remake, as it is redone version of the first game in the series. If you've played Avadon: The Black Fortress
, you should know what to expect here, as the game makes use of many of its art and mechanics. The player takes control of a bunch of outcasts who have been banished to the underground caverns of Avernum, never to return. Avernum is thus made up of scavengers and survivors who face myriad threats on all sides, and the main storyline followers the newcomers' adventures as they make their way in this dark world. As usual with fantasy RPGs, there are all the expected character creation options, with things like classes and experience points all rearing their heads, while there are plenty of items to pickup, beasts to slay and sidequests to complete. The whole thing is played out in isometric fashion, bringing to mind classic Ultima
games and if you are a fan of such things, there's much to enjoy here. The world is one which is brought vividly to life, thanks to the intriguing story and pleasing visuals, with exploration being one of the game's main joys. There's plenty of depth to be found in the creation systems and other mechanics so for fantasy fans, this makes for an enjoyable adventure.
