Solid tactical wargaming
The Battle Isle series is a pretty decent collection of sci-fi turn-based strategy games and Battle Worlds follows closely in the franchise's footsteps. It also takes inspiration from the likes of Panzer General so if you're a fan of either of these games, or the genre in general, there's much to enjoy here. It's quite familiar in most aspects, from visuals to gameplay mechanics, but there's still a solid game here which is worth a look. You have both single- and multi-player campaigns available, with multi-player capable of being played without your opponent actually being there at the time, which is handy. The game itself is played out over a standard hex-based grid system to make movement and combat easier. As usual, you issue commands to your units, with two commands per unit per turn and which leads to some interesting tactical decisions. Units can gain experience for successfully winning combat rounds, while you can also capture enemy buildings, but with infantry only, making them the key to victory. There's a good range of units to experiment with, including naval ones to add in some variety, and it's a lot of fun utilizing them all to execute a well planned attack. If you are looking for a new turn-based strategy game, this is a good bet. It's quite easy on the eye, if a little old-fashioned and lacking in personality, while the gameplay is solid and well implemented. Missions are pretty tough and require some proper tactical thinking, with combat being interesting and enjoyable. Overall, a good solid piece of wargaming.
