With its lush visuals and spellbinding, music-based gameplay, Beatbuddy is a cracking little platformer which harks back to the glory days of Donkey Kong Country and which should be played by any genre fan. The game tells a charming tale, wraps it up in wonderful, hand-painted graphics and then throws in some delightful platforming shenanigans to complete the whole package. The game finds you in control of Beatbuddy, awakened from a deep sleep and who then finds himself on an epic quest to save his buddies. He must venture through six different worlds, navigating platforms, enemies and puzzles as he goes, and while this may sound familiar stuff, what sets apart Beatbuddy from the competition is the way that this incorporates music into its gameplay. There are a number of tracks from some cool bands here and which are blended into the action and which will help you solve the puzzles and explore further. The tunes also give the game a real living, breathing feeling to it, and help to make things much more immersive than your average platformer. For much of its running time, this is a great little game. It's perhaps not for hardcore gamers as it isn't overly challenging, but if you're more of a casual player, you'll have a great time here. The storyline isn't the best, but this is easily ignored, while the controls can be a tad frustrating at times, but again this isn't overly irritating. In other areas though, this really excels. The visuals are gorgeous, with great use of color reminiscent of Badlands, while the mix of gameplay and the inclusion of the music-based elements are both superb. All in all, a fun way to spend your time.
