I say old chap!
It might look crude and a far cry from point-and-click adventures like Monkey Island and Discworld, but Ben There, Dan That! is a rip roaring bit of good old-fashioned fun. This game, and its sequel, the equally hilarious Time Gentlemen, Please! is an retro-style adventure that sees you embarking on an absolutely bonkers adventure, where you will travel back in time and experience history for yourself in an utterly unique way. The story is the big draw here, so to say too much would be to spoil much of the game's appeal, but if you like surreal, British humor with a big does of sarcasm, innuendo and other such things, then you'll have a great time here. The gameplay is fairly traditional point-and-click stuff, where you explore, solve puzzles and explore some more, but it's all done very well so any lack of real innovation is made up for by the sheer madness of the story. This really is a wonderful little adventure and if you have any fondness for things like Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, then you owe it to yourself to pick this up. The visuals have a wonderful rough quality to them, which might look crude, but which suits the game's tone perfectly, and there are some cracking character and environmental designs. The gameplay is fun if you like the genre, with the puzzles being challenging and satisfying but rarely unfair, thanks to the degree of logic on display. The script is hilarious, with genuinely funny dialogue and situations that will have you laughing out loud with alarming regularity. For anyone with any interest in adventures, this is a must play.
