Classic end to a classic series
The Blackwell series of adventures is a superb one, which combines clever puzzles with excellent writing to create a franchise which stands comfortably alongside genre classics like Monkey Island
and Beneath a Steel Sky
. This one is actually the final episode in the series so it's definitely not the best place to start, but if you do like this sort of thing, do yourself a favor and head back to Legacy, the first entry, and see how it all began. This one continues the tale of Rosa Blackwell and Joey Malone, psychic investigators, as they probe a terrifying spirit which is tearing apart the souls of the innocent for its own dark purposes. To say much more of the story would be to spoil much of the game's appeal, but suffice to say, it's full of twists and turns and some shocking revelations that will keep long term fans happy but surprised. The gameplay is familiar if you've played other games in the series or other point-and-click adventures, and sees you exploring various environments, switching between the two main characters, each with their own unique abilities, solving puzzles and letting the narrative unfold. For a finale to a much-loved series, this is about as good as you could hope for. The story is utterly gripping, with first rate writing that ups the stakes dramatically and which pits our heroes against their greatest foe yet in top notch fashion. The visuals remain as well done as ever, with dark, grim and gritty environments and characters that have a lot of personality. Throw in the clever and inventive puzzles, and you have a classic adventure.
