Anime plus fighting = cool
BlazBlue hails from the developer behind the well regarded Guilty Gear series and if you're a fan of 2D fighters like Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat, then this is well worth a closer inspection. It's got some lovely anime-style visuals and some intense fighting action which is enough to keep genre fans happy for a while. There is some pretense at a story here and which revolves around a powerful council which was once intended to protect people but which now uses its power in a repressive manner. It's all pretty inconsequential stuff and instead the focus of the game is on traditional 2D fighting action. Most of what's on offer here is pretty familiar stuff, with a decent roster of combatants to choose from, and plenty of special moves to discover as you advance the story. There's little here that's new or different but it's mostly executed well enough that you can overlook this. There's a good range of options on offer, with a few different modes, although multi-player is limited to local only. For the most part, this is a pretty solid fighting game. The visuals are lush, with lots of gorgeous environments and characters to enjoy, while the sound is equally decent. The range of fighters is broad enough to keep you interested, while the moves on offer are spectacular and fun to use. There are issues with the story, which is rather baffling, but this isn't a big issue, although there are problems with internal balance which are a bit more annoying. However, they're not great enough that this isn't worth checking out if you like the genre.
