Let's get legendary!

Blood Bowl is another offering from the Games Workshop stable of fantasy/science-fiction tabletop games, alongside Dawn of War, Shadow of the Horned Rat, and Space Hulk. This one is a fantasy take on American football which doesn't take itself too seriously and which is great for a bit of sports-based violence on a wet Sunday afternoon. If you haven't played the game before, this legendary edition is the one to go for as it includes the base game plus a bunch of extras, including more teams and a story mode. The game itself sticks closely to its boardgame inspiration, pitting two teams of fantasy races in a version of American football which relies heavily on kicking the living daylights out of the opposing team. You can play in either turn-based fashion or real-time, which makes for an interesting option, while the extras here include races like the Dark Elves, Undead, Halflings and more, along with new stadiums, a story mode where you play through a narrative about the origins of the sport as a trainer, along with a few other bits and bobs. For fans of the tabletop game, this is a must have as like many of GW's licenses, it really nails the look and feel of its inspiration. The gameplay is easy enough to pick up but there's heaps of choice in the teams and options, so there's also a lot of depth and strategy required if you want to make it to the top. Things can get a bit chaotic at times, especially in the real-time mode, but that's all part of the fun and if you've got some mates to play with, this is an entertaining romp.
