Go go Chroma Squad!
Although not quite on the same level as Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, Chroma Squad is a fun little tactical RPG which doesn't take itself too seriously and which is well worth a look. In a similar fashion to the equally bonkers Telepath Tactics, this one combines a bizarre storyline with some fun gameplay to generally good effect. The plot here finds five actors quitting their jobs to create a Power Rangers inspired TV show and requires players to help them set up their studio. You have to find actors, buy sets and create giant robots for your show, with the combat aspect coming in when you actually get filming. There are lots of customization opportunities with many RPG elements like skill trees, equipment, branching storylines and crafting, while the whole thing is laced with pop culture references to classic children's TV shows. The combat plays out in isometric fashion with some nicely varied environments to discover and a good variety of enemies to take on, all of which are recreated in appropriately cheesy fashion. Chroma Squad certainly isn't a game for those who like serious experiences, but if you're just looking for a bit of silly fun, it should scratch that itch. It's not as deep or complex as it might have been, with generally simply mechanics that are easy to pick up but which mean that the game loses its appeal fairly soon. The main draw is the unique setting and this is undeniably appealing, especially if you have fond memories of Power Rangers and the like. Not a classic but one for nostalgia lovers and those after an entertaining time.
