Get down, get down, you funky cat
Playing out a bit like other strategy games such as Laser Squad and Invisible Inc., Crookz is a fun addition to the genre that scores a lot points thanks to its setting. Fortunately, it has a lot more to recommend it, with a diverse and quite extensive single player campaign, slick visuals and some highly tactical gameplay. The game is set in the 1970s, and sees you in control of a gang of thieves with big ideas. There's actually a nicely complex story to enjoy here, which involves the classic themes of betrayal amongst thieves and revenge, and it has a good few twists and turns along the way. As with other similar games, you basically have to carry out a series of heists, which require you to pick your team and equipment first, and then infiltrate various locations in order to find your target, while avoiding or taking out guards, security systems and the like, before making your getaway. There's a lot of cool equipment to make use of, including chloroform, camera jammers and explosives, while your team members also have a range of skills to exploit. For the most part, Crookz is a lot of fun. There's a real funky vibe to the game, thanks to its distinctive 70s setting, and which helps to make it stand out from the crowd. A little more could have been made of this aspect in terms of the visuals however, as they're good enough but perhaps not quite as funky as they could have been. The gameplay isn't overly original but it is fun and quite challenging, so overall if you like this genre, there's a lot of entertainment to be had here.
