Get your beat on
Mixing elements of classic roguelike adventures such as Rogue
and so on with rhythm games and the aesthetics of 16-bit era RPGs like Beyond Oasis
, this is a cracking little game which is well worth your time. A quick glance at screenshots or writeups may make you think that this is just another dungeon crawler, with its top down perspective, cool little critters and heroes, traditional fantasy story and lots of action and fighting, but if you take a bit more time to investigate, you'll find something much more interesting. The difference between this game and its genre brethren is that NecroDancer is all done to music, with your movement, exploration and combat all tied to the rhythm of whatever funky beats happen to be playing. The game comes with a cracking soundtrack that is a great mix of fast and slow paced tracks, which really influences the gameplay quite considerably, but you can also pull in your own tracks to give things a really personal feel. This really is quite a joyous little treat. It probably would have been enjoyable enough if it simply been a traditional dungeon crawler, thanks to its general sense of humor, well crafted mechanics and lovely old-school visuals. However, the introduction of the rhythm-based mechanics is a stroke of genius and elevates the game into something completely different. There's a real sense of joy on display here and the soundtrack is undeniably infectious, so you won't be able to play without a big silly grin on your face. If you're just looking for an all-round great game which is original and exciting, this is a great choice.
