Handsome but dull
The Dark Eye is a visually stunning but slightly shallow point-and-click adventure that should be of interest to followers of Dracula and Myst, but which might not be that fascinating for the casual player. The game is set in a complex and dark world, where superstition runs rife and where war has ruled for centuries. A chance for peace approaches, but the coming of strange beasts suggests that the bad days might not yet be over. The player takes on the role of a young bird catcher, who is sent forth to investigate the reports of bird attacks, and which sees him embarking on a terrible but epic adventure. What follows is a fairly familiar point-and-click adventure, where you explore a variety of exotic environments, interacting with a number of NPCs and collecting items to solve inventory-based puzzles. The Dark Eye had the potential to be a cracking addition to a crowded genre and while in certain areas it's very appealing, in others it's a big let down. Perhaps the game's strongest point is its graphics, which are undeniably handsome and very pleasing to look at, with lots of details to draw the eye. However, the animation is very crude and basic which does detract from the effect somewhat. Furthermore, while the story is pretty interesting, the main character is an annoying creation who is very hard to sympathize with. The story is interesting, but while you're given the illusion of choice, in reality, most conversations end up in the same place no matter what you select. Throw in some bland and predictable puzzles and you're left with a bit of a disappointment.
