Humanity at its darkest
Hearts of Iron is a much-loved series of hardcore historical strategy games which is known for its complexity, depth and high level of detail. The games are perhaps not for casual strategy fans but if you're looking for something a bit more full-on they definitely come highly recommended. Darkest Hour sprang from the labors of some experienced fan modders who set out to create their own take on the games they loved, and it has to be said, they have succeeded admirably. The game presents you with a variety of short and long campaigns which take you through the 20th Century, from the Great War to the Cold War, and which allow you to recreate some of the period's most complex conflicts in startling detail. This is a pretty in-depth look at war, so you can expect to be managing a lot of elements, from moving and supplying troops, to engaging in high level diplomacy that can really affect the larger picture. This might look daunting if you've never played such a game before, but it's actually surprisingly accessible, and which only serves to broaden the game's appeal. The interface is slick and cleverly designed, so although there's a lot of complex options to play around with, you never feel lost. The range of campaigns is also impressive, and the mix of short and long ones means you can choose something to suit your time or playstyle. Whichever you choose though, you're sure to lose a lot of time, as everything here is extremely addictive. There's a lot of customization and depth here, so whether you're a long term fan or a newcomer, there's something for everyone here and if you have any interest in strategy games, this should be part of your collection.
