The eye opens...

Set in the same role-playing game universe as titles like Chains of Satinav this is an interesting but ultimately unsatisfying action adventure which is just a little too middle-of-the-road for its own good. It's not bad as such, but it's one for diehard genre fans only as there isn't enough to keep more casual players hooked. You play the role of Cairon, who is on the trail of his sister after she ran away from an arranged marriage, but now there are evil forces tracking her too, so you need to keep your eyes open. In terms of story, this one is a little darker than many other games set in the same universe, and benefits from it. The gameplay is fairly typical action RPG stuff, with the usual blend of quests, sidequests, skills, customization and plenty of hack 'n' slash combat. There are also some nice moral decisions to make through dialogue-based encounters, and which can affect how things unfold, such as which faction to join. If you are a massive Dark Eye fan, then you're probably going to want to play this, as it does bring the world to life in a decent manner. The story is a pretty good one but it might not be enough for those unacquainted with the Dark Eye universe, although fans will likely appreciate the additions to the lore. The gameplay is run-of-the-mill stuff, with lots of hacking and slashing, and while it's fun, it also gets a little dull after a while, as there's a general lack of polish to the whole thing, as if inspiration was lacking during development. Overall, not a terrible game, but far from a must play.
