Sometimes, you don't really want to engage your brain all that much when you fire up a video game and instead you just want to blow the living daylights out of digital bad guys. It's an age-old concept that has been with us since the dawn of gaming, starting out with classic shooters like Space Invaders. Desert Gunner continues that idea and is basically a variation on the Beach Head/Pacific Gunner school of game design. It's essentially an arcade shooter that simply give you the opportunity to unleash your rage upon wave after wave of enemies. You're placed in control of a static gun emplacement which can swivel 360 degrees and your one task is to shoot down everything that comes your way before you can be overrun. You've got unlimited ammo along with access to more powerful weaponry that just your starter gun but you're going to need everything you can lay your hands on as this is intense, hardcore stuff. There are only twenty levels to play through but they start out tough and get tougher so don't expect an easy ride. Desert Gunner is probably about as simple an idea as you can get and if you go in only expecting endless action, then you're not going to be disappointed. There is a certain sense of relentless satisfaction about the whole thing as blowing up bad dudes is quite compelling, although perhaps only for a short while. It does soon get repetitive due to the lack of variety but there's no denying while it lasts, this is fun stuff. The controls take about three seconds to learn and the visuals are nothing special but for sheer old-school shooting action, this just about delivers.
