Crack some zombie skulls!
For anyone with fond memories of old-school scrolling beat 'em ups like Double Dragon and Renegade, this crazy little game will bring those good times flooding back. It's a pixel-style fighter which features zombies and heaps of enjoyable action, although it might be a little tricky if you're just looking to crack some skulls. There's probably some kind of story here but it doesn't really affect the gameplay much and it's probably best to ignore any pretensions towards plot or character development and instead just focus of the fun. You've got four main characters to choose from (plus two unlockable ones) each with their own skills, and then it's time to roam through some grim and gritty environments (four areas in total, with an entire game taking you through ten levels of a potential sixteen) smacking the living daylights out of the hordes of zombies which bar your progress. You can play with up to four players, which is by far the best way to go, while the whole thing takes its inspiration from horror movies (shades of Splatterhouse?), and with the specter of permadeath hanging over everything. Devil's Dare is certainly a whole lot of fun, especially if you grab some mates to play with, but the addition of permadeath and the sheer intensity of the zombie onslaught might put some players off. If you can handle the heat though, there's a good time to be had. The moves are easy to pull off but satisfying to use, while the retro visuals are slick and stylish, if a little dark at times. It's not a game to play forever, but while it lasts, it a blast.
