Back and better than ever
Doom is of course something of a legend in the gaming industry, the title that really exploded the first-person shooter scene all those years ago. The franchise has seen a few wobbles over the years, with some slightly dodgy instalments, but it's great to be able to report that this reboot does a fine job of restoring the property to its awesome roots. The single-player campaign is a cool one, consisting as it does of thirteen levels which once again take place on Mars and see you facing off against a seemingly unstoppable horde of demons from hell who have been unleashed upon the galaxy. On top of the single-player portion, you also have a multi-player setup where you can take part in the usual array of game types against other hardened real world death dealers. Both aspects allow use of the franchise's signature over-the-top and hugely fun weapons while the whole thing is also bathed in blood and gore at every turn, making this one for the bold and not the faint of heart. Doom doesn't stray too far from its origins but it does get just about everything right for a modern, 21st century interpretation of a classic. It's certainly impressive visually, with some excellent graphics which are detailed, slick and absolutely lush to look at, thanks to some great design work. The gameplay is finely honed, with tight controls and clever mechanics that are all implemented in stylish fashion. The action comes at you as hard and fast as you would hope for from a Doom game, so really any serious shooter fan will want this in their collection.
