Starts out great, goes downhill quickly
This is an add-on pack for the cracking space adventure that is Drox Operative and if you're a fan of that, you're going to want to check this out. The base game is a wonderful bit of science fiction action, where you control a spaceship and zoom around the galaxy, blasting merry hell out of aliens, while there are also plenty of RPG elements to add depth and which make the game thoroughly absorbing. The galaxy is a dynamic one, which changes in response to your action, while the leveling up and range of customization gives a great sense of progression. This expansion pack introduces a new main race with their own story and quests to complete, while there are also an additional 19 new subraces to experiment with. You also get even more customization options in the form of ship components as well as a few other bits and bobs. If you have played and completed the likes of Star Control 2 or Ring Runner, then you should seriously consider picking up the base game first before moving on to this (you need the base game in order to run this pack). The game mechanics remain much the same, and which are well implemented and robust. The universe is well thought out and believable, with the new races adding even more depth and filling things out nicely. The visuals are appealing, if not quite spectacular, while the gameplay is undeniably fun. However, the problem (with the expansion pack and the original), is that prolonged play soon reveals the gameplay to be too repetitive, with a lack of variety that proves boring. There's a lot of gameplay here to enjoy, but you might find yourself turning off after 15 hours or so. While it lasts though, this is a fun ride.
