It might not look all that fancy, with its simple but stylish graphics, but Frozen Synapse does a great job of bringing games like Laser Squad and Rebelstar into the 21st Century. It's got some superbly clever ideas and plenty of deep, tactical gameplay to keep lone players hooked, but if you've got someone else to play with over the net, then it takes on a whole new level. You actually get two copies of the game when you buy it, so you've got no excuse for sharing it and this really is the best way to play. The single player game has an extensive story-based campaign to play through which is genuinely enthralling, but it's in the two player mode when the game really comes alive. However you play it, the focus here is on deeply strategic turn-based combat, with the player or players in control of individual squad members across a series of varied missions. The catch here though, is that moves are planned and executed simultaneously, so you don't have the luxury of seeing what your opponent has already done and instead you have to work in the dark. It's a simple enough thing, but this one gameplay mechanic raises the drama and tension here to incredibly high levels. There's plenty of freedom in how you complete missions, which gives the game a high replay value, while the missions themselves are nicely varied and which offer plenty of tactical opportunities. The stylish visuals are minimal but work extremely effectively as there is no superfluous clutter to get in your way, and overall, this is a first rate bit of wargaming.
