Hmm, donuts...

The Grotesque Tactics series is a pair of strategy RPG games which offer a nice line in twisted humor but which is otherwise pretty undistinguished and rather bland, making them for diehard genre fans only. This one picks up directly after the original game finished, so you might want to play that first, with the story now revolving around the appearance of a mysterious mist which teleports people in the underground catacombs. As Drake, one of the earlier game's heroes, it's your job to recruit a party of fellow adventurers and then set out to defeat this new evil. If you have played the first game, you're going to be very familiar with the core gameplay here. At its heart, this is a turn-based strategy role-playing game, which involves moving your characters around the map, buying gear, having conversations, and doing sidequests, while the combat takes place on hexagonal fields, and makes use of action points in order to carry out actions, and with each character having their own abilities. If this series is known for anything, it's its humor and this returns in abundance here, but it's quite an acquired taste and if you're not attuned to it, you're left with an overly familiar game which is not likely to hold your attention. If you are into this kind of humor though, you're likely to be engaged, as the bonkers situations and pop culture references will keep you hooked despite the gameplay's deficiencies. The visuals aren't bad, but lack the color of the earlier game thanks to the new location, and overall this is reasonable stuff, but little more.
