Like its companion piece Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale is one of the best loved D&D games in gaming history and which provides everything old-school RPG fans love. This Enhanced edition includes the original game plus extras including new quests and items as well as a bunch of other features. The main game is an isometric adventure which finds players caught up in a complex plot involving frost giants and a terrible evil which is threatening the land. What follows is an epic adventure where you create a party of six various characters from an extensive set of options and then set out to explore the world. Unlike other similar games like Planescape: Torment, this one is quite linear in terms of story and character, with little in the way of dialogue options and with a strong focus on exploration and combat. It remains a top class adventure though, and the array of initial customization options should keep genre fans happy. This version included six quests which were cut from the original as well as the half-orc as a playable race, a bunch of weapon and item combos, new spells, a new mode where you can just enjoy the story without worrying about dying and a few other tweaks. For the most part, this remains a classic fantasy adventure. The story and world are well realized and compelling, with a genuine sense of adventure and exploring the unknown. The combat is tight and well balanced, while the visuals remain full of charm and personality. It might be a touch linear for some, but apart from this, Icewind dale remains a classic.
