Jag is back!

The Jagged Alliance series is a generally decent set of turn-based tactical combat games, a little like classics such as Laser Squad. Back in Action is actually a remake of Jagged Alliance 2 but which features some notable changes to the core gameplay, not least of which is the fact that it's now played in real-time. It's probably fans of the series that are going to be most upset by the changes as it now doesn't feel like a real Jagged Alliance game but if you've never played one before, this remains a decent experience. The game finds you on a fictional island under the rule of a female dictator who you've been hired to kill. You'll get to recruit a bunch of mercenaries who must be sent to the island to take back sectors before you can get to the big boss herself. There are two main sections to the game, the tactical map where you can check out the lay of the land, and the tactical mode where you directly control your mercs as they explore and take out bad guys. The gameplay is now real-time but you can pause and give orders to your mercs which can be combined into complex sets to be executed. This is an interesting change and if you're not tied to the franchise, it actually makes for an interesting experience, creating some very tense encounters which force you to think strategically. The visuals are also pretty nice, with some atmospheric environments backed up by good sound design while the customization options and side quests add depth and variety. So, although true fans might not consider this a JA game, in truth, it's actually a solid experience.
