You're our only hope
The Last Federation is a tricky game to review. In many ways it offers all the things that fans of sci-fi strategy games like Master of Orion and Space Rangers enjoy, but it also suffers from faults like excessive grinding and over complication. At the end of the day though, if you enjoy a good, solid, deep bit of strategy, then you'll find this interesting, if not overly original. There's quite an unusual setup to the game, in that you are the last surviving member of an alien race and it's your job to create a lasting federation of planets that will ensure peace reigns throughout the galaxy. To achieve this, you're going to have to explore, bring technology to backward planets, manipulate their economies, play the political game and nurture relations between various races. Of course, not everything is going to go your way, so there's also turn-based combat to enjoy and which adds a nice extra layer of substance to the game. The Last Federation starts out pretty well, with plenty of options to get stuck into and which offers a lot of depth and strategy to sink your teeth into. The setting is at least a bit different from normal, which helps to hook you in but once you are in, you'll soon discover things aren't as good as you thought. There's little in the way of real freedom and the galaxy and races are too tied in to specific behaviors to make the gameplay feel truly open. There's also a lot of grinding to be done before you really get anywhere so overall, this is one to approach cautiously.
