Art meets horror
A mix of Amnesia, Myst, and Neverending Nightmares, Layers of Fear is an interestingly arty horror experience which just about delivers on the scare front while also succeeding in telling an intriguing story and marrying it to satisfying puzzles. The game thrusts you into the role of a painter who is desperately trying to finish his masterpiece while exploring the crumbling halls of an old mansion. The story is mostly an excuse for you to explore the house, looking for clues to the painter's tragic past and that's pretty much what you're going to be doing here as it is only by seeking out these clues that you can progress through the mansion to the game's shattering climax. The whole thing is very much inspired by classic paintings, which is reflected in the art style and the mansion itself while one neat trick the game uses is the frequent shifting of camera angles to represent changes in the painter's psyche and mental state and which means you never quite know what's going to happen next. Layers of Fear is certainly a very handsome game, especially for one done in Unity, and the art design is likely one of the key selling points for many players. The environmental design is impressive, with lots of genuinely creepy rooms and situations to explore and which are very detailed. The gameplay is less successful, mostly due to some pacing issues which lessen the impact of the story while there's not a whole lot to do beyond exploring, with only some fairly simple puzzles for variety. Still, as a pure, compressed horror experience, this is genuinely chilling stuff and worth seeking out.
