It's got a cat as a hero
The original Legend of Kay was a cracking slice of 3D action adventure, which played out like a less serious version of Darksiders, and with the anniversary version, it's looks even better than before. The basic gameplay remains the same but it's been given a nice lick of paint to make it appear more appealing to modern audiences and this is one update which works really well. The hero of the game is Kay, a cat who takes it upon himself to step in when the gorilla emperor invaded Kay's island with his troops. Kay starts out the game as a scholar but ends up being a pretty bad ass fighter by the end and has one epic adventure along the way. The inspiration for the game is clearly those cool old Asian fighting movies, and the main focus is on combat. You have access to a wide range of over the top moves, and there are some superb abilities to unleash, and which turn fights into stunning celebrations of martial arts power. You start out with just a sword but can upgrade later to things like steel claws and a massive warhammer, and which can be upgraded. There are also platforming style sections to enjoy as well as puzzles, but the main focus is definitely the fighting. Legend of Kay really is an underrated gem. It's got some lovely visuals, especially in this version with its upgraded textures and new character models, with great environmental design and lots of special effects. The fighting is deep and satisfying, with loads of combos to discover, while the other elements are also integrated well. All in all, this is a wonderful little game that deserves to be discovered.
