Fantastic fantasy fun
Taking its inspiration from the classic RPG adventures of yesteryear like Baldur's Gate, Dragon's Quest and Wizardry, Lords of Xuliman is a top notch piece of gaming that is well worth sinking some time into. It combines elements of old-school games with a modern sensibility to great effect and should be played by any genre fan. The story is a familiar one, and finds your character walking the long and dangerous road of the Herald of the Gods as you attempt to restore balance to the world. What follows is an epic journey that leads you through a well-crafted fantasy world full of intrigue and danger, with an open land that is largely yours to explore as you wish. All of the expected elements are here, including a heavily customizable party, highly strategic turn-based combat, plenty of sidequests and of course lots of monsters to slay and gear to uncover. One of the game's biggest strongpoints is the level of care that has been paid to the characters, and although it isn't plot heavy, you do end up genuinely caring about your party which is a huge plus point. Standing alongside this is the fact that everything else is simply extremely well done. The world is well defined and believable, with some wonderfully varied environments to explore and plenty of intriguing locations to discover. You also have aspects such as puzzle solving and resource management to worry about, making this a nicely varied game which packs a lot into its extensive running time. It might not be as well known as the Elder Scrolls games, but this is more than worth a visit.
