The resurrection of Shepard

The Mass Effect series is one of the most beloved science fiction franchises around (just don't mention the ending to Mass Effect 3 in front of the hardcore fans unless you want to see the sparks fly), and although this second installment isn't quite as good as the first, it's still an excellent adventure. It does help to have played the first one, as you'll miss out on a lot of the epic sci-fi story, so do yourself a favor and head back to the start to get the most out of the series. The story is a pretty complex one, with many ties to the original, and involves a new threat to the universe, the disappearance of millions of humans and the resurrection of the seemingly dead hero who saved the galaxy in the first game. As before, this is a mix of RPG and action/shooter, with most of the game focusing on mission-based blasting, but mixed in with dialogue-based options which can affect the story, and the usual RPG shenanigans, like leveling up, and so on. However you look at it, Mass Effect 2 is a superb game. It's highly ambitious, with a grand, sweeping storyline that packs in heaps of twists and turns and some very memorable characters with excellent dialogue. As an RPG, it's also very successful, with the dialogue sections giving you a real sense of affecting the narrative, while the action sections are tight and exciting, with some very cool setpieces. Visually, it still impresses, with excellent design work and a stunning sci-fi aesthetic. There are minor quibbles but really, this is a modern classic.
