Unleash the magic!
If you can imagine a mix of Geneforge
, Hotline Miami
and tactical RPGs and RTSs that is all laced up in eighties-style visuals and music, then you might just have an idea of what you're getting with Megamagic. It's a pretty fun mashup that mostly works and if you're into RPGs and strategy games, then this is well worth closer inspection. It takes place in a world where magic and technology are closely linked but where these two opposing forces are at war with one another. You play the part of a novice magician who gets to explore the world, learning new spells and battling against the forces of technology as you attempt to become the greatest wizard in history, while also uncovering dark secrets about your Order's history. What follows is a mix of action RPG, RTS and tactical battle game as you venture through dungeons and explore an open world while crafting and learning spells. The whole thing is laced with pop culture references too which adds some extra fun to proceedings. This is a pretty decent game on the whole but it doesn't all quite come together and it does feel a little lacking if you're coming to it from the Geneforge franchise. Although it promises much, in the end it boils down to a tactical combat game, which certainly isn't bad but it's just not quite as much as is suggested. The combat itself is fun with the addition of spells and alignments making things more interesting while the neon-drenched visuals and audio make the game stand out from the crowd. All in all, a pretty enjoyable experience which doesn't quite deliver on its promises.
