Snake is back and better than ever!
The Metal Gear series has come a long way since the days of the first game, a topdown Zelda-style adventure which practically wrote the book on stealth. The franchise really hit the big time with the introduction of the Metal Gear Solid line and although the games are pretty divisive (11 minute cutscenes, anyone?) there's no denying there's a huge following for anything that has Hideo Kojima's name on it and which stars the legendary Snake. The Phantom Pain is the latest entry in the series, following on from the teaser prequel that was Ground Zeroes, and expanding upon that game's open world concept and moving away from the traditional linear format the series has followed. Here, you get to explore a truly massive set of environments with almost complete freedom, while following a typically complex plot (although there are fewer cutscenes than usual) and engaging in all the usual stealth hijinx. Base building is back, while there's heaps of things to do and see, including riding around on your very own horse. If you're a fan of the series, then this really is a no-brainer and pretty much provides everything Metal Gear followers have been wanting for years. There's a genuine sense of freedom to the whole affair and the whole thing looks absolutely stunning, with an attention to detail that is just jaw dropping. The stealth mechanics are almost perfectly implemented and missions are varied and hugely challenging. Some of the boss fights are a little disappointing, but any faults the game has are minor and it stands as a genuine modern classic.
