Gore galore!

The original Mortal Kombat was a visceral, if somewhat shallow, fighter that provided a bit of an alternative to the well established Street Fighter series, with plenty of gory one-on-one action. This is the tenth main entry in the franchise and shows that there's actually some depth to the formula but which also provides all the blood and guts fans love. In essence, little has changed since those early days, with the game remaining true to its roots of being a 2D beat 'em up. The story follows on from the 2011 installment, but as with most fighters, it's pretty inconsequential stuff and most players will just get on with the action. You've got an almost ridiculously large roster of fighters to choose from, along with an equally large number of moves to try out, while the series' trademark fatalities return in even gorier fashion than usual. Aside from the story mode, you have a few other variations to try out as well, with challenges, ranked matches and more to try your hand at. Although little has really changed, Mortal Kombat remains an exciting and challenging fighter that is well worth checking out. Despite its apparent shallowness, there's actually plenty of depth to be had here, with lots of combos and such like to figure out. In terms of visuals, this more than delivers the goods, with superbly grim environments and well animated and designed characters. The gore is just as over the top as usual while the controls and sound are equally impressive, making this a top notch addition to any fighting collection.
