Nobody makes me bleed my own blood
If you have a hankering to relive the glory days of Final Fight, Streets of Rage and Renegade, then Mother Russia Bleeds might just be the fix you're looking for. It's a nicely retro-style scrolling fighter that packs in heaps of violence with some slick visuals and some surprising gameplay mechanics to make for a pretty entertaining romp. The story is set in an alternate version of Russia and finds a bunch of hardened criminals trying to take on an oppressive government while dealing with their own crippling addictions. What follows is a classically style scrolling beat 'em up which takes you through a series of grim and imaginative environments while controlling one of the various characters and basically beating the living daylights out of everyone you meet. You can choose to walk these mean streets alone but by far the best way to play is in the multiplayer mode, where you can fight with up to three of your chums and which takes things to a whole other level. Mother Russia Bleeds is certainly not for the faint-hearted as it is an extremely violent and gritty game, but you'd kind of expect it to be given the basic concept. It doesn't evolve the genre much beyond the introduction of a few clever ideas, but it does execute everything extremely well. The campaign mode is surprisingly involving, with a genuinely compelling storyline while the action is everything you could hope for, with plenty of brutal moves and weapons to try out. The cracking visuals are the icing on the cake, making this a great choice for fighting fans.
