Kick alien scum

Natural Selection 2 is the sequel to the original Natural Selection, which was itself a mod for Half-Life and if you're still into playing team-based shooters then this is a cracking one to pick up (assuming of course that you can find someone to play with). There's little in the way of storyline and instead the action takes place in a futuristic setting where players vie for control of a series of different locations and environments. One team is a classic Marine-style force, while the other is an alien life form and where the principal goal is simply to destroy the opposing team's control points. The Marines obviously use ranged weaponry to deal out death, while the aliens are more focused on stealth and melee combat, which makes for an interesting blend of playstyles. In a nice twist, both teams are led by a commander who watches the action in RTS style and gives orders such as constructing buildings (which allow for weapon upgrades and other effects) while dropping buffs such as ammo and health packs. This really is a cracking effort for an indie shooter and still stands up well today. The essential shooter mechanics and sound and well implemented, and although the controls aren't the best, the map design is excellent. The RTS elements are also nicely done and make the game stand out from the crowd, while the asymmetrical approach to teams also works really well. The visuals are decent enough for an indie offering too, so if you're able to find players, this is great stuff.
