How to do a sequel right

This D&D-based RPG sequel to the original Neverwinter Nights is a top notch piece of fantasy adventuring that should be checked out by all self-respecting genre fans. It builds on its predecessor and adds in even more content to make this a fine example of how to do a sequel properly. The plot is fairly typical fantasy stuff, revolving around a mysterious silver shard, a king of shadows and a young orphan child whose destiny is greater than his humble upbringing would suggest. One of the interesting things about the game is that it differs quite significantly in terms of gameplay from its predecessor and focuses largely on party-based combat, squad management and narrative driven dialogue. As is usual with these things, you create a character at the start, with an extensive set of classes and other options to choose from, before moving on to the game itself. Combat here is similar to Baldur's Gate, being real-time but with the option to pause and give orders, while you also obtain a stronghold which can be upgraded. Neverwinter Nights 2 really is a superb piece of RPGing. It's got all the depth and options fans could ask for, and builds upon the original in fascinating ways, making it more than just a re-run. The story is compelling, with a cast of intriguing characters and some well written dialogue to push things along, The visuals are evocative and well detailed, bringing this land to life in expert fashion, with sound design to match. All in all, this is a cracking adventure that deserves to be played.
