Old-school meets new school

If you're a fan of old-school arcade/platform adventures like Ghosts & Goblins, Castlevania and Metroid, then this modern day take on the genre will be right up your alley. It's got a pretty much perfect mix of action and adventure and is dressed up with some lovely retro graphics and makes for a supremely entertaining time. The story here is fairly simple stuff and revolves around the return of the Dark Gods who want to spread Darkness across the land once more. Standing between them and victory is perhaps the oddest named hero in video gaming history, with players taking control of Haggis, a warrior who has laid down his sword but who must now reluctantly wield it again. What follows is a classic platform/action game which features plenty of slaying enemies and exploration across a variety of grimly atmospheric environments. Ghosts 'n' Goblins is pretty much the closest comparison to this game, but with a bit more freedom in the level design, with its mix of jumping, killing and boss battles. As far as old-school tributes go, this is as about as good as you could hope for. The controls are tight and responsive, making leaping and slaying an absolute breeze, while the levels themselves are cleverly designed, with plenty of variety in their layouts and which require skill to navigate. The enemies are also highly imaginative, with some cool fantasy designs which are rendered well in retro fashion. When you add in the boss battles, a heap of collectibles and some fun action sequences, you have a great, if slightly short, take on a classic genre.
