Fish are friends
Basic and bonkers it might be, but Oden Todo Fish is one of those strangely addictive games that is hard to put down once you've picked it up. It's a far cry from the likes of other fishing games such as Sega Bass Fishing
so don't go in expecting a serious fishing sim, but if you just want some good old fashioned time wasting fun, this might do the trick. It's a very Japanese game where you find yourself riding a sea lion with the goal of catching lunch for your two little friends. The whole thing is presented in simple enough fashion, with 2D anime-style graphics, and sees you floating around the screen on your sea lion, trying to catch anything that swims by, before chucking it in a huge pot. The controls are equally simple, requiring little more than the space bar and the arrow keys, so even though the game is in Japanese, you'll be zipping around in no time. The whole thing is played against the clock, with the only real goal being to rack up as many points as you can before the timer runs out. As such, this is very much a game for fans of high score chasing, as seen in Pac-man
or Space Invaders
, and it is great for just wiling away a coffee break. The visuals are of course pretty basic, but they're charming enough in their own way, thanks to the bright and vibrant use of color and nicely drawn sprites. The gameplay is simple too, but strikes a neat balance between being intuitive and requiring skill, and it isn't so simple that it's all a no-brainer. It might not be a classic, but Oden Todo Fish could just get you in trouble with your boss, as it's that much fun.
