Fans of Metroid and Castlevania-style adventures are going to go crazy for this superb little platformer, and if you've never played the game, this Definitive Edition is the one to go for, as it contains a whole raft of extras, and even if you have already got it, it's almost worth picking up again. You play the part of a white guardian spirit who finds themselves whisked away during a storm to a faraway land. You're adopted by a bear-like creature but when the forest withers away, the bear dies also, leaving you alone in a strange land. It's now your job to restore life to the forest and which requires you to seek out the life elements which bring balance. What follows is a classic Metroidvania-style experience where you can explore a large open-world at will, while seeking out ability upgrades, defeating enemies and solving the myriad puzzles which bar your progress, and which involve the usual mix of platforms, switches, moving objects and so on. Although many of the concepts seen in the game have been used before, rarely have they been combined with such sheer skill and aplomb. This really is a classic adventure that simply gets everything right. The story is a heartwarming one, filled with emotion, while the gameplay is a finely tuned blend of elements where everything works perfectly. The puzzles are simple but elegant, while the visuals are just beautiful, with a wonderfully atmospheric design aesthetic that is a joy to behold. Controls are pitch perfect and if there's a quibble to had, it's that the difficulty level is uneven, but apart from this, Ori is a stunner.
