Your doom beckons!

Part of the classic and much-loved Phantasy Star series of RPGs which mix Ultima- and Zelda-style gameplay to superb effect, this is another cracking entry that deserves to be played by anyone with an interest in old-school adventures. It combines the usual complex, winding storyline with well-thought out gameplay mechanics and some smart visuals to create another great experience. The plot here is fairly bonkers and finds two royals about to wed but who are interrupted by the appearance of a strange creature who kidnaps the bride. It thus falls to the groom to get his girl back and find out just what the heck is going on. What follows is a fairly traditional top-down RPG where you control a party of heroes as they explore a vast world, picking up quests, roaming around dungeons, and of course battling monsters. Unlike other games in the series, this one is set in a medieval world while another interesting aspect is the cross-generational nature of the storyline which leads to some tough choices being made along the way. Although Generations of Doom does feel a little different to the rest of the series, there's no denying it's still a cracking RPG. It's got all the elements you need in such a game to have a good time, with the storyline proving pretty compelling, especially with the addition of choices, while the gameplay mechanics are nicely done and well implemented. The visuals too are lovely, in that retro way, with a lot of charm, so really for any old-school fan, this is a must play.
