The phantasy comes true

Widely considered one of the best classic era RPGs, along with Final Fantasy and such titles, Phantasy Star IV is an absolute must play for anyone who's even slightly interested in the genre or it retro games in general. It's got everything you could ask for in such a game, from the convoluted but entertaining plot, to the lovely visuals, heaps of exploration, and exciting turn-based battles. The story here is pretty involved and rather winding but it basically revolves around that classic genre staple of an ancient evil that is once again stirring from a centuries-old slumber and which is now threatening the world. You play the part of a young hunter who finds himself starting out with a simple assignment but who quickly gets caught up in things he never expected and who is forced to save the day. In many ways, this is what is now seen to be a standard 90s JRPG, with top-down world map exploration, random battles, a party system, turn-based combat and so on. However, this is one of those game which effectively wrote the rule book on such things and as such, it gets pretty much every element just about bang on. The storyline is the usual nonsense but it's entertaining and always compelling with some memorable characters so you'll be hooked to the end. The gameplay too is fun and varied with the right mix of combat, exploration, and other elements so it's unlikely you'll get bored. The visuals have got that classic 90s look to them, with some splendid character and environmental design to enjoy and there's a hefty adventure here too so if you're looking for something meaty to sink your teeth into, this is a great bet.
