Protect those islands!

This is a sister title to the similarly named PixelJunk Shooter and like that game, this is a cracking bit of entertainment. They're very different experiences, the other being a blaster, while this one is a tower defense game, but what they share is a joyous spirit. This one sees you in control of Tikiman, a sort of defender of the forest, and who finds his beloved home under siege by hordes of monsters. It's your job to help out Tikiman by placing weapons in strategic points around the various maps which will hopefully wipe them out before they do too much damage. You have a wide range of weapons at your disposal, including arrows, cannons, lasers, ice guns and more, while you also have access to powerups and other useful items. There are three different islands to play through, with 47 environments to experience, while there's also a hugely enjoyable co-op mode to try. PixelJunk Monsters doesn't really offer much to the genre that's particularly novel or unusual, but it scores a lot of points by simply doing everything well. It's a fairly simple game, and one that is perhaps not suited to hardcore gamers, but if you're of a more casual persuasion, then you're likely to have fun here. The game has a straightforward but very charming visual style that packs a lot of personality, while the sound is equally as pleasant. The range of weapons is quite extensive and adds much to the appeal, and while the gameplay isn't as fast as some might like, it still gets fairly hectic but is always fun. Try it out if you're a newcomer to the genre.
