Modern take on Defender

While Pixeljunk Shooter is a far cry from the likes of early shooters such as Space Invaders and Sky Shark, its lineage can clearly be traced back to these pioneering titles and stands as a solid addition to an age-old genre. There is a story here, but it's not of a great deal of importance overall, and stands as a vague curiosity only. In the far future, the human race has colonized the galaxy and vast corporations regularly send out more ships to find whatever they can. When a distress call goes out from a colony planet, a scavenger ship is sent in to investigate, which is where you come in. The basic idea of the game is similar to Defender, in that you are trying to rescue colonists, while negotiating your way through a series of treacherous environments. The game scrolls in several directions, with free movement and shooting, but one of the most interesting elements is the role of physics in proceedings. There are several different substances to be encountered, such as magma, water, gas and ice, each with their own particular properties. You have to experiment with the substances in order to open up new areas, such as cooling down magma with water, then blasting apart the newly formed and cooled rock. It's these elements which make the game worth playing and if you're looking for a simple mix of action and puzzling, then this is a good bet. The visuals are straightforward enough, lacking a bit in personality but doing their job well enough, but the gameplay is strong enough to make this worth seeking out. Not a classic, but fun nonetheless.
